MAREA: Innovative Footwear Design
Marea signifies a transformative innovation in footwear design, redefining what’s possible with 3D printing technology. Utilizing Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) and the capabilities of Signed Distance Fields (SDF), we achieved what was once thought impossible: a functional TPMS gyroid midsole. Marea’s design demonstrates an innovative use of computational design tools and advanced modeling techniques to materialize an unprecedented outcome.
We set the challenge to create FDM footwear using SDF and an altered gyroid structure. To succeed, we developed custom support algorithms in Grasshopper, using the collar part as point of division to optimize the creation of a lattice-like midsole printed without internal supports. The result was a feather-light, sustainable shoe weighing just 350 grams, maintaining structural integrity and unmatched comfort—an innovation that redefines footwear design.
The design draws inspiration from the fluid motion of tidal waves, with an undulating pattern capturing the ocean’s movement, a tribute reflected in its name. The value Marea creates is beyond just a shoe design; it’s a testament to the untapped potential of computational design and additive manufacturing.
