Fast-R NITRO™ Elite 3 X PUMA
At the Boston Marathon Weekend, PUMA unveiled its latest breakthrough in racing footwear: the FAST-R NITRO™ Elite 3. Engineered to deliver exceptional speed and efficiency, this shoe is designed to elevate runners’ performance by enhancing energy return, reducing weight, and optimizing stability.
We have developed the Computational Design Process, which enables the design and optimization of the FAST R3.
Advanced Engineering Meets Accelerated Development
Building on the success of previous FAST-R models, the FAST-R 3 brings substantial improvements focused on three critical aspects: weight reduction, performance enhancement, and precision engineering. Leveraging PUMA’s extensive experience in motorsports, the development process incorporated advanced digital simulation tools, commonly used in Formula 1, to predict and refine the shoe’s behavior under real-world conditions such as propulsion and compression. This innovation dramatically shortened development time, allowing for rapid iterations and fine-tuning.
The end product is a significantly lighter shoe, shedding approximately 95 grams compared to its predecessor, without compromising performance or durability.
Data-Driven Design: Biomechanical Testing and Virtual Modeling
To initiate the development process, our studio collaborated with PUMA to conduct an in-depth biomechanical analysis involving ten trained runners. Each athlete ran on a force-measuring treadmill while wearing pressure-sensitive insoles, which captured detailed data on pressure distribution and ground reaction forces throughout each stride.
This data was used to create a virtual model of the Fast-R2, revealing in real time how the shoe responded to dynamic loads, where stresses were concentrated or minimal, how materials deformed during propulsion and landing, and how efficiently energy was transferred.
This model enabled a fully digital iterative design process. For instance, if the simulations indicated underutilized foam in specific midsole zones, the material was removed. If the carbon plate exhibited high stress in key areas, targeted reinforcements were added. All of this optimization occurred within the virtual environment, eliminating the need for costly and time-consuming physical prototypes at early stages.
Through this process, we reduced the shoe’s weight from 249 grams to 167 grams—over 30%—by removing superfluous material without compromising structural integrity or performance. This reduction alone accounts for nearly 0.8% of the improved running economy observed in testing.
A Key Pillar in a Holistic Performance Ecosystem
The FAST-R 3 is part of PUMA’s broader ecosystem of performance running footwear, which includes models like the Deviate Elite—engineered with similar technologies but calibrated for different running styles and training phases.
This approach reflects PUMA’s long-term vision: supporting athletes across their journey, with tools tailored not just for race day, but for every step of their performance progression.
The FAST-R NITRO™ Elite 3 represents a significant leap forward in high-performance footwear. By combining biomechanical insight, digital engineering, and cutting-edge materials, PUMA—supported by our studio’s advanced design methodologies—has delivered a product that redefines speed, efficiency, and innovation in the competitive running landscape.
